Gunners fire up title race

Premier League leaders Manchester United visited Arsenal on Sunday afternoon with the season approaching its conclusion. A win for Arsenal would see Chelsea retain hope of seizing the title, but a win for Sir Alex Ferguson’s men would all but end their challengers’ hopes.

United are currently in the middle of a two-legged Champions League semi-final, and maybe it proved a distraction as they performed surprisingly poorly. The first-half was goalless, although Arsenal had the better of the play and were unfortunate not to have a penalty on two occasions, Nemanja Vidic escaping unpunished.

Their luck did not last however, as early in the second-half Robin Van Persie cut in to set up Aaron Ramsey to score a classy opener for the Gunners. United pressed for the equaliser as time went on but were unable to find a way through, and had a penalty shout of their own dismissed in the dying minutes. The final score was 1 – 0.

United stay three points clear of Chelsea, with the two clubs now looking ahead to when they meet at Old Trafford next Sunday – a match which could prove decisive in the title race.
