Reports from the US on Monday night had the number of deaths climbing well above 100 in the aftermath of a devastating tornado which struck the town of Joplin, Missouri.
The latest count was 116 as reporters from all over the country travelled to the stricken area. Photos and videos showed how the storm had completely flattened entire blocks, with many stuck under rubble. Some had been rescued but the effort had barely begun, as far more were suspected of being trapped or missing.
This latest, deadly tornado is part of a series which have been taking their toll on America this year. Many people are questioning why they are occurring with such ferocity and when they will end, but immediate thoughts and actions must be with those currently in such grave danger in Joplin.
