Germany announces nuclear shut down

Germany’s coalition government has announced that all nuclear power will be stopped by 2022 after an investigation following the Fukushima disaster in Japan in March.

There have been many protests against nuclear energy in Germany since the world witnessed the implications of the danger of the stricken plant in north-east Japan which was hit by the earthquake and tsunami. Many have pointed to it as evidence that countries must start to look to sustainable energy sources for the future.

The announcement makes Germany the first major power to give up their nuclear energy after a surprising reversal of the plans initially set out by the coalition. It poses many interesting questions for other nations who still rely on nuclear power.
