Earthquakes cause deaths and damage in Spain

Two earthquakes with magnitudes of approximately 4.5 and 5.1 struck to the east of Lorca, Murcia in southern Spain on Wednesday evening.

Reports and details are still emerging with the area in “chaos”, but so far ten people have been confirmed dead, and that figure could rise as many buildings have been damaged. Rescue teams are searching home-by-home for victims. A nearby hospital has been abandoned due to the damage to the structure.

Aftershocks have hit other parts of the region, where there are concerns that the death toll may increase as the emergency teams arrive to help. About 10,000 people have been affected altogether and may spend the night outside for fears of further danger.

Earthquakes are common in the area but are rarely significant. These seem to have been tragic exceptions.
