United on brink of nineteenth title

Possibly the biggest match in this season’s English Premier League took place on Sunday afternoon as leaders Manchester United hosted second-placed Chelsea at Old Trafford, with the title potentially hanging on the result.

Less than a minute had gone by when Ji-Sung Park played in Javier Hernandez to give the hosts the lead in front of their delirious crowd. Chelsea seemed shell-shocked and United pressed for a bigger advantage which arrived when Nemanja Vidic headed in Ryan Giggs’ cross.

The visitors were very poor and substitutions had little effect. United created many chances but also defended deeply, which allowed Frank Lampard to prod home after a cross. Chelsea pressed more towards the end but lacked the inspiration to equalise, so United won 2 – 1.

That means they need only one more point to claim what will be a record nineteenth title, thus overcoming fierce rivals Liverpool.
