Hearts fan attacks Lennon on pitch

The recent troubles in Scottish football surrounding Celtic manager Neil Lennon were brought to attention in extraordinary fashion on Wednesday night as he was assaulted when standing next to the pitch.

His side were playing away at Hearts and had taken a two-goal lead in the forty-ninth minute when one of the home supporters ran through security and made contact before being hauled to the ground and arrested.

Police recently intercepted parcel bombs in the post addressed to Lennon which had the potential to “maim or kill”. There is also disciplinary action facing his club’s great rivals, Rangers, over their fans’ sectarian chanting.

Such events have cast a shadow over football in Scotland, and yet the audacity of this latest assault seems equally shocking. There is only one match left in the Scottish Premier League’s calendar, and perhaps that is a very good thing.
