FIFA caught offside?

Football’s world governing body, FIFA, is facing more allegations of corruption following the bidding and voting process for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

The main focus is on the 2022 result, which was won – quite surprisingly – by Qatar. The English FA submitted files to FIFA on Wednesday which supposedly give evidence that a number of representatives took bribes as compensation for backing the winners.

Claims that four members asked for bribes were first voiced by Lord Triesman, who stepped down as the head of England’s bid in the run-up to the vote. FIFA president Sepp Blatter demanded evidence to back up the claims, and it seems the FA has obliged.

Many are urging an independent enquiry and a reform of the bidding process, although it remains to be seen if FIFA will take any action after considering the evidence.
