Queen’s Ireland visit ends

Friday was the closing day of the Queen’s historic trip to the Republic of Ireland, the first by a British monarch since its independence. It has been declared a success by many, although republican Gerry Adams has shown disappointment.

During the visit, which started on Tuesday, the Queen expressed sympathy for the “troubled past”, and many commentators have claimed that her appearance has improved relations between the countries considerably.

She was due to journey to Tipperary and Cork on Friday before her departure. The visit has passed without any major troubles, despite threats from dissidents and even a bomb warning for London earlier in the week.
