Birmingham and Blackpool relegated on final day

The final day of this season’s Premier League was termed “D-day” and “survival Sunday” as teams at the bottom scrapped to stay up. Blackpool had the unenviable task of requiring a result at Old Trafford against new champions Manchester United.

The visitors missed a glorious chance in the opening minute and then started to struggle, falling behind to a Ji-Sung Park strike. They attacked with familiar gusto though and equalised thanks to a typically fine free-kick from Charlie Adam to go in 1 – 1 at half-time.

The Tangerines continued to come forward and took the lead with a Gary Taylor-Fletcher flick after a fine move, but were pegged back immediately when Anderson replied for United. The hosts regained the lead as Ian Evatt sent the ball into his own net. Michael Owen added another to make it 4 – 2.

Elsewhere, Wigan won at Stoke. Wolves suffered at home to Blackburn but scored a couple of consolation goals, and Birmingham lost in the last minute at Tottenham.

All of that meant Blackpool and Birmingham joined West Ham in being relegated.
