Reds cruise past Toon

A busy Sunday in the Premier League saw Liverpool host Newcastle at lunchtime and Manchester City welcome West Ham late on. Andy Carroll was the focus of much attention at Anfield as he was in the squad to face his former club for the first time since his big-money move in January.

Things started very well for the home side as Maxi Rodriguez put them ahead early on. Newcastle competed until the hour mark when Dirk Kuyt coverted a penalty, and then Luis Suarez wrapped up a 3 – 0 win, with Carroll coming on for the final twenty minutes.

City started well at Eastlands with confident passing and Nigel De Jong gave them the lead with a decent strike. They doubled it rapidly through Pablo Zabaleta. Demba Ba pulled a goal back before half-time but Mancini’s men were able to hold on for a 2 – 1 victory.

Those results mean that City are on the brink of qualifying for Champions League football next season as they are seven points clear of both Liverpool and Tottenham. The Reds now appear favourites for fifth place.
