BBC Panorama reveals residential hospital abuse

Secret footage filmed during an investigation by the BBC Panorama programme shows shocking scenes of patients being mistreated by “carers” in a residential hospital. Police have since arrested four members of staff.

The video displays disturbing scenes of physical and verbal abuse against patients with learning disabilities and autism. The owners, Castlebeck, have issued an unreserved apology and suspended thirteen staff.

A clinical psychologist who viewed some of the evidence said: “Where’s the therapy in any of this? I would argue this is torture.”

The hospital, staff and owners have provoked angry reactions and will now be the subject of a thorough investigation following this shocking discovery.
