United comfortable without Rooney

Leaders Manchester United welcomed Fulham in the English Premier League on Saturday afternoon. For once, Wayne Rooney was not able to make the headlines as his hotly-debated two-match ban was upheld by the FA on Thursday.

His absence did not hinder them in the slightest though, as it took only ten minutes for Dimitar Berbatov to give them the lead. The advantage was doubled before the break by Antonio Valencia, recently back from a long-term injury.

The two goals effectively finished the game with United settling to defend their cushion against a Fulham side who did not look particularly threatening. The 2 – 0 result put Sir Alex Ferguson’s men ten points clear of Arsenal.

Chelsea found more resistance as they hosted Wigan but eventually overcame their opponents with a Florent Malouda goal giving them a 1 – 0 win.

Other (more entertaining) matches saw West Brom fight back to win 2 – 3 at Sunderland, while Spurs beat Stoke 3 – 2.
