Rooney gives United control

Saturday was a busy day for football in the Premier League, with matches involving most of the big sides being played.

At lunchtime, leaders Manchester United travelled to Upton Park to face the resurgent West Ham. The hosts led 2 – 0 after Mark Noble converted two penalties.

The second half was about Wayne Rooney, whose hat-trick inspired a United comeback before Javier Hernandez added another to make it 2 – 4.

Chelsea’s trip to Stoke began poorly as they fell behind to a Jonathan Walters strike, but came back through Didier Drogba as they drew 1 - 1. Liverpool, meanwhile, lost 2 – 1 at West Brom.

Arsenal hosted Blackburn in the evening game, needing a win to keep pressure on United. However, they struggled once again to break their opponents down and were held 0 – 0.

Rooney’s goals put United seven points ahead of their faltering rivals in the league table.
