McIlroy lacks mastery of Schwartzel

Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy, 21, went into the final round of the Masters at Augusta on Sunday on twelve under par, holding a four-shot lead over his nearest challengers. Tiger Woods started the day seven shots back, needing an inspirational charge to claim the Green Jacket.

McIlroy struggled from the first tee as he began his round by unerringly finding bunkers, resulting in him being tied for the lead after only the second hole. A disastrous 7 triple-bogey at the tenth put him behind the leaders as a host of other players, including Woods, made steady progress in what developed into an incredibly tense finale given the intensity of the competition.

The winner emerged in the shape of Charl Schwartzel from South Africa, who sank his putt at the eighteenth to finish as the winner by two shots on fourteen under-par and claim his first Major in compelling style.
