Spurs taught Real lesson

Harry Redknapp and his unpredictable Spurs team visited Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie. Madrid’s home loss to Sporting only days before offered a good omen for the Londoners.

They were also boosted by the fitness of Gareth Bale, but it was the hosts, complete with Cristiano Ronaldo, who took the lead after only four minutes when Emmanuel Adebayor was given a free header. Peter Crouch was sent off early on for the visitors for two rash fouls.

Reduced to ten men, Spurs could not withstand the Spanish giants' attacking potency. Adebayor headed in a second, then Angel Di Maria hit a stunning third before Ronaldo volleyed in in the dying stages to make the final score 4 – 0.

The only (minor) positive for the English team was that the margin of defeat might have been far greater.
