Goodluck for Jonathan in Nigerian election

Results of Nigeria’s presidential election voting were broadcast on Monday. They indicated that the current Christian leader, Goodluck Jonathan, has gained an insurmountable advantage.

Jonathan became president only last year for the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) after the death of his predecessor. Victory this week will mean he becomes the first elected-leader from the Niger Delta. He currently holds a lead of 11 million votes, with only 6 million left to be announced.

The opposition is in the shape of Muhammadu Buhari, a former military chief from the Muslim north of Nigeria. The results so far have caused a number of riots in northern states, where youths supporting Buhari have reportedly starting revolting and attacking followers of Jonathan.

Their anger is fuelled by some dubious figures from the voting in certain southern areas, where the PDP claims to have gained over 95%, something which seems very unlikely.
