Arguably the tastiest of the Champions League quarter-finals was the all-English clash between rivals Manchester United and Chelsea. The first leg was played at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.
The match started evenly but the visitors scored a vital away-goal when Ryan Giggs set up Wayne Rooney to side-foot the opener for United. Chelsea struggled to find quality with the conspicuously-disappointing Fernando Torres in attack, but then somehow failed to score on the stroke of half-time as a cross hit the post and Frank Lampard’s finish was cleared off the line.
United looked to defend their lead, becoming less adventurous in the second-half. They defended well and limited Chelsea’s opportunities until Ramires broke into the box in injury-time and was brought down by Patrice Evra, only for the referee to refuse them a penalty.
The 0 – 1 result puts United in a very strong position for the return leg at Old Trafford.
