Villa let United off

Aston Villa entertained Manchester United at Villa Park in the lunchtime game on Saturday. The visitors have an excellent record at the ground in recent seasons, having won the vast majority of meetings.

The first half was lively, with Villa’s young players providing plenty of energy and enthusiasm which created an interesting match. Dimitar Berbatov missed the best chance though, for United, when he shot wide when well-placed to score. They went in goalless at the break.

After the interval Villa started to create more chances. Stewart Downing proved a real threat on the left wing, sending over many crosses, one of which James Collins headed against the bar. Seconds later Gabby Agbonlahor struck the post.

They finally took the lead they deserved when Ashley Young was fouled in the penalty area by Wes Brown, promptly getting up and converting the resulting spot-kick. They then doubled the advantage soon after with a superb breakaway goal finished by Marc Albrighton.

However, they did not build on that and allowed United to claim an unlikely draw, as Federico Macheda and then Nemanja Vidic scored late goals to grab a 2 - 2

All the other matches in the Premier League are to be played later in the weekend, with Chelsea not hosting Sunderland until Sunday evening, but still looking to increase their lead at the top even further.
