Draw in first Ashes test

England fought back from a seemingly difficult position to claim a draw in the first test of the Ashes series in Brisbane, Australia.

Things were looking bad for them after the third day, starting their second innings over two-hundred runs behind their hosts, but a combination of favourable conditions and modest bowling resulted in Andrew Strauss and Alistair Cook both hitting big centuries to get them out of trouble.

Strauss went soon after, but on the final day it was left to cook and Jonathan Trott to continue the superb batting performance. England declared on a massive 517 – 1, with Cook 235 not out and Trott 135 not out – extraordinary totals on a flat pitch and against toothless Australian bowling. The match ended with the hosts on 107 – 1, not having enough time to chase the win.

The draw sets up an intriguing series, with it becoming difficult to say which team has the advantage for the four remaining tests.
