United beat Spurs without Rooney

Manchester United hosted Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday evening in the Premier League in the knowledge that they would be without star man Wayne Rooney for another period.

Despite apparently committing his future to the club by signing a new five-year contract, it was announced that he will miss about three weeks with an injury which is worse than was first anticipated.

The match itself was very open for the first half-hour, until Nemanja Vidic headed the home side ahead. Efforts then continued to fly around both goals until the break.

So it stayed until, with a few minutes left, an astonishing refereeing decision provided the main talking point. Nani went past a defender then threw himself to the ground, and when a penalty was not given he dragged the ball towards his body clearly with his hand. The Spurs goalkeeper rolled the ball for a free-kick, only for the referee to allow Nani to kick the ball into the empty net. It finished 2 – 0 in a very bad-tempered atmosphere.

Nevertheless, United earned the three points to keep them within touch of Chelsea.
