Benitez hits back

Former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez struck back at the ex-Liverpool ownership structure on Tuesday afternoon, following their criticism of his reign.

Recently-ousted co-owner Tom Hicks has tried to blame the Spaniard for the club’s decline last season, but Benitez has claimed that it was the interference of the board and, in particular, Managing Director Christian Purslow, which was at fault.

He went into some detail to explain the changes and controls they imposed over the club, suggesting that they altered training regimes and even decided which players to buy and sell, and that this was the main cause of Liverpool’s recent poor form.

Despite the takeover by American group New England Sports Ventures last week, the club sits in the relegation zone in the Premier League, with many concerns over the quality of the players, and the new manager, Roy Hodgson.
