Chile celebrates miners’ escape

Much of Chile has been celebrating as the rescue of the thirty-three miners trapped underground was completed after a sixty-nine day ordeal.

Each of the men was brought up in succession during a process which took about twenty hours. Extraordinarily, everyone was said to be in a decent state of health with no serious concerns.

The country’s president and his wife were among those packed into Camp Hope, the venue set up to host the evacuation procedure. They led the celebrations, saying what a fantastic occasion this was, not only for Chile, but the whole world.

It is a truly remarkable story which has finally come to an end. The courage, bravery and spirit of the men who were trapped will surely go down as one of the most memorable moments in recent history.
