Controversy over 2018 decision

England’s troubled bid for the 2018 world cup proved unsuccessful after the voters on Thursday chose the bid from Russia.

Many in England were still hopeful of landing the tournament, despite the campaign being plagued by controversy, arguments, and allegations of corruption aimed at FIFA members.

Russia’s victory came as somewhat of a surprise, beating the joint-bids from Spain and Portugal, and Belgium and the Netherlands. The location for 2022 was even more of a shock, as middle-eastern country Qatar will host the competition.

These decisions prompted some accusations from England and other (defeated) campaign teams that the voting process may not have been completely honest.

So it is Russia that has the honour of hosting the world cup in seven years’ time, with England’s loss meaning that football will have to wait still longer to “come home”.
