Deadline day drama

It was mayhem in the football transfer market on Monday as the January window closed. Liverpool and Chelsea were the main protagonists as both clubs looked to rush through big-money signings at the last moment.

When the dust settled, the biggest news of all was that Fernando Torres had finally made his move from Anfield to Stamford Bridge for the sum of around £50 million. The Blues also confirmed the late purchase of centre-back David Luiz.

Liverpool tried to make up for the loss of the Spaniard by bringing in Uruguay’s Luis Suarez for £23 million, and English youngster Andy Carroll from Newcastle for £35 million.

Those transfers generated plenty of interest and attention, but there was a surprising lack of action from the other big clubs in England, who did not make any significant buys between them.
