Tunisia situation intensifies

Tunisian troops are patrolling the country’s capital, Tunis, in force today after President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali fled following protests.

The move came after scenes of violence and looting were witnessed overnight, as shops and the main train station in the city were targeted.

Stand-in leader, Mohammed Ghannouchi, is looking to restore order and to unify a government from opposition groups.

The President was forced to flee to Saudi Arabia after twenty-three years in power due to extensive protests and rallies against him over the state of the country. Dozens of people are said to have died in the unrest.
